Around a dozen armed dacoits allegedly looted cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs from a house in Bhikkanpur village in the district, police said.

The incident occurred last night as the dacoits forcefully entered the house of one Sandeep under Muradnagar police station, held the entire family hostage on gunpoint and looted the cash and ornaments, Deputy SP Pandey said.

As the dacoits were decamping with cash and ornaments Sandeep (35) and his mother Rajbala resisted and raised alarm upon which the robbers opened fire and injured them, he said.

Villagers assembled at the spot and tried to encircle the dacoits upon which they fired in the air and fled with the booty, the Deputy SP said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital and is under treatment, Pandey said, adding no formal complaint has been received at Muradnagar police station in this regard.
