Armed miscreants today looted over Rs 6 lakh from a Vananchal Gramin Bank at Chatarpur in Palamau district, a senior police officer said.

Seven miscreants armed with fire-arms arrived in four two-wheelers and took the staff members and customers hostage at gun point and decamped with the booty, said Superintendent of Police Indrajeet Mahatha..

Initially, we had report that the miscreants looted Rs 9.50 lakh but Rs 3.26 lakh, which they could not take away in haste, was found in the bank following a search, Mahatha told newsmen here.

The SP said the miscreants could sneak into Aurangabad district of Bihar as the police detected one speeding four-wheeler followed by a pick van suspiciously moving fast from Tandwa towards the Bihar border.

Earlier, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Chatarpur) Sanjay Kumar did not rule out the possibility of local link behind the incident.

All exit points linking adjoining Garwah district and Aurangabad district of Bihar have been sealed and massive hunt launched to track down the culprits, he said.
