Armed robbery averted in North Delhi

Crime Branch averted an armed robbery in North Delhi's posh Civil Lines area here after they nabbed four members of an alleged interstate gang following a brief gun battle.

One inspector and a constable were also injured in the encounter which took place on Saturday.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lives in the same area at 6, Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines.

Police recovered two sophisticated pistols of .32 bore with eight live and one fired cartridges and two country made pistols of .315 bore with four cartridges along with a Maruti Celerio car which was also used in sensational gold loot in Malluredevpallu area of Hyderabad City, Telangana on April 21.
 

The accused have been identified as Deepak alias Rajesh (26), Dhir Singh (33), Ashok alias Pahalwan (35) and Ravi (26). Among them, Dhir Singh has been found to be wanted in a rape case with a minor lodged at Vijay Vihar Police Station and another case of abduction.

"We had got a tip off around 12:15 PM on Saturday that desperate criminal Rajesh would come in Civil Line area along with his associates to commit a big armed robbery. Our team laid a trap near expected place of their arrival at Yamuna Marg, Masonic Club and at about 2:10 PM," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

The car was signaled to stop by the team but they were finally stopped after a chase at Service Road, Yamuna Marg. On being cornered, Deepak fired shot towards police while Dhir Singh tried to run over the police party. In self defence, a head constable fired one shot from his service pistol, he added.

The police team soon overpowered all of them. During the incident, Inspector Atul Tyagi and Constable Hamender sustained injuries in their hands and chest and they were later got medically treated.

Accordingly, a case under appropriate sections of law was registered and the accused persons were arrested.

On sustained interrogation, the accused persons have disclosed that they had come to Civil Line area to commit a big robbery after a specific input received to them that huge amount of cash would be carried in a car in that area.

Deepak has also disclosed that he had committed a series of loots in different states of India including Delhi, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
