The Army has issued an order to its retired personnel saying they should use the word 'retired' only as a suffix to their name as "rank never retires".

In its circular issued on July 21, the Army headquarters said that it was seen that retired officers were mentioning the word 'Retired' after their rank which is incorrect.

It said the ranks of service officers are granted by the President of India and they are valid after their demise also, Army officials said.

The circular was issued to remove confusion among the retired Army personnel regarding the use of word 'retired'.

The circular stated that the correct way of using the word retired was 'Brig ABC (retd) and not Brig (retd) ABC'.

The Army officers are entitled to retain their rank before their name as per privileges given under Constitution.
