The army today paid its last respects to Sepoy Gursewak Singh (23), who laid down his life during a gunbattle with a group of infiltrators from across the LoC in Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir today.
In a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, the General Officer Commanding, Ace of Spades Division laid the wreath on behalf of the General Officer Commanding, White Knights Corps (16 Corps) and all the ranks of the division for the supreme sacrifice made by the soldier in the line of duty, an army spokesman said.
He described Singh, a native of Warana village of Tarn Taran in Amritsar, Punjab, as a "dedicated, brave, sincere soldier and a thorough professional who loved his job to the core".
"The nation will remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty. He will continue to motivate the future generations," the army spokesman said.
Singh is survived by his father Balvinder Singh.
Two army jawans, including Singh, were killed and five others -- two soldiers, two civilian women and a BSF officer -- were injured as the Pakistani army opened unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati and Poonch sectors of Poonch district today, violating the ceasefire.
In Krishna Ghati, the Pakistani army opened fire in a bid to facilitate two infiltration bids, killing Singh, an army officer said, adding that the infiltration bids were foiled.
