Army celebrates Jhangar Day

Army today celebrated "Jhangar Day" to commemorate the sacrifice made by Brigadier Mohd Usman, who was martyred during the 1947-48 operation in Naoshera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir.

A grand yet solemn memorial function was held at Jhangar on the occasion.

GOC 16 Corps Lt Gen D S Hooda was the chief guest at the function, which was attended by General Officer Commanding, Ace of Spades Division, Maj Gen V P Singh and other senior military and police officers.

Brigadier Mohd Usman had played a pivotal role as the commander of 50 Parachute Brigade, during the recapture of Jhangar and the battle of Naoshera, which earned him two titles of endearment, 'Hero of Jhangar' and 'Saviour of Naoshera'.
 

For his courageous leadership and act of valour, he was posthumously awarded the "Maha Vir Chakra". A memorial has been built at Jhangar, where the Brigadier sacrificed his life.

Among those who paid tributes to the 'Hero of Jhangar' were the 'Bal Sainiks' who as young boys, had taken part in the 1947-48 operation along with Brigadier Mohd Usman.

Modified scooters were presented to people at the function who suffered mine injuries along the Line of Control.
