Army has accomplished operation "Mission Hum Safar" it had lauched on August 5 to clear Kalith Field Firing Range of unexploded shells and explosives.
"On October 8, Indian Army conducted the last round of search for explosives and shells at Kalith Field Firing Range as part of its 'Mission Hum Safar'. Entire firing range has been cleared," Defence Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta said today.
The army had launched the clean-up operation on August 5 under the aegis of Crossed Swords Division, he said.
"The aim of 'Mission Hum Safar' was to build confidence among locals by showing the concern of Indian Army for their safety and security," Lt Col Mehta said.
The Indian Army carried out extensive search of exposives by using explosive detector dogs, remotely operated vehicles, mine prodders, deep search metal detectors and bomb disposal teams.
"The mission was carried out in two phases. During phase - I, the search of entire impact area of Kalith Field Firing Range was carried out by using state of the art technology," he said.
"Five unexploded shells found during the search were destroyed on the spot. To ensure that no unexploded shells are left on the range, the army carried out a second round of search and declared the KFFR as hundred per cent safe," he added.
This effort was undertaken to reassure the locals about safety and security of entire range. Local villagers supported the mission and lauded the efforts put in by the Army to clear the ranges, Lt col Mehta said.
