Army man held for opening fire in air

An Army man was arrested for allegedly opening fire in the air during the Ambedkar birth anniversary celebrations near here today.

The Army man, Pounraj, told police he did not have any ulterior motives but opened fire in the air only to pay homage to the leader, police said.

People, who had gathered for the celebrations in front of the Ambedkar statue at Kovilpatti, got panicky when the soldier suddenly opened fire in the air, the police said.

Police arrested the army man and is investigating the case.
