Army to organise polo tournament in Lucknow

The Central Command of Indian Army will organise polo tournament here from December 8 to December 14 with players from the Indian polo team participating in it.

This year seven teams are expected to participate, including the Army Service Corps team from Bangalore, RVC team Meerut, Indian Military Academy team Dehradun, National Defence Academy team Pune, Artillery team Nasik, 61 Cavalry team Jaipur and team from the Navy, an official spokesman said.

It will be held at Surya Khel Parisar (Old Butchery Ground) in the city.

A number of players from Indian Polo team would be participating in the tournament, he said.
 

Major Vishal Chauhan and Lt Col Ravi Rathore of 61 Cavalry have just played in China and made India proud.

Brig SS Kashyap of central command, who has represented Indian Army Polo team in Poland last month, will be participating.

Besides, Col G S Pandher and Lt Col Samanthray, both national level players, are also expected to participate.

League matches will be played on December 8, 9, 11 and 12.

The main event will be Army Commanders Polo Exhibition match on December 10.

The event is being planned under the guidance of GOC-in-C, Central Command Lt Gen Rajan Bakhshi.

Vintage car Rally, dog show, motorcycle display, paramotor display and military band display would be held during the week.

The spokesman said that Lucknow has the unique distinction of being the first city to host Indian Polo Association Cup (Indian Open) in 1912.

He said the central command has now taken the initiative to revive and popularise the sport in the city for which the Surya Polo Ground is being readied to host the polo tournament.
