Army XI win; IOC, Karnataka draw in Murugappa hockey

Former champions Army XI thrashed last year's runner-up Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) 6-0, while Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Mumbai came from behind to draw 1-1 against Karnataka in their opening encounters of the 89th Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament, here today.

In the inaugural match today, Karnataka sounded the boards in the 49th minute through Machiahpa but four minutes later former India internationals Deepak Thakur equalised for IOC.

In the second match, Army dominated the proceedings and opened their account in the 19th minute when Jonny Jasrotia scored from the team's third penalty corner.

Others to score for the Army were Biraj Ekka (21st), Binoy Bengra (52nd), Siraju (55th), Chandan Aind (64th) and Pawal Lakra (70th).
