Around 200 peacocks have been have been killed over the last two months in Rajasthan, an NGO today alleged.
State president of NGO, People For Animals, Babulal Jaju, has written a letter to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje seeking her intervention in the matter.
"Carcasses of about 200 peacocks were found in Tonk, Bhilwaral, Bundi, Nagaur, Jhunjhunu, Ajmer, Jhalawar and Sikar and 21 FIRs have been lodged but no action against poachers were taken," Jaju alleged.
Jaju alleged that it was "negligence" of the forest department officials and the police which was taking toll on the national bird.
When contacted, state Chief Wildlife Warden, S N Singh said, the concern officials take appropriate action as per rules when such incident come to light.
"I do not have such data (of deaths of peacocks) compiled as of now, but our officers remain alert and take prompt action in such matters," Singh said.
Jaju also demanded from the chief minister to direct concerned officials to ensure that action is taken against culprits, and arrangements were made proper for protection of the national bird.
Meanwhile, three peacocks were today found dead in Sabbalpura village in Bhilwara district, after allegedly being fed poisonous tablets mixed with their fodder, by poachers, a forest official said.
Two other peacocks were also found writhing in pain, at the same spot, which were then sent to a hospital.
The sick peacocks were admitted to the Jahajpur veterinary hospital where their conditions were said to be stable, the official said.
The three carcasses were sent for postmortem and forensic comments at the same hospital, he said.
A forest guard, Mool Singh, was informed by the villagers of the incident this morning.
After the forensic report, the forest department would file a case against unknown poachers, the official added.
