Around 3,500 children have been adopted in in 2017-18 (till March 9), the government informed Parliament today.
Minister of State for Women and Child Development Ministry Virendra Kumar told the Rajya Sabha that a total of 3,480 children have been adopted in 2017-18, out which 2,820 were in-country, and 660 were inter-country.
The minister informed that Prospective Adoptive Parents(PAPs) and single women above 40 years of age enjoyed priority under the Regulation 60 of Adoption Regulations, 2017.
"As of now, 13 PAPs and 18 single women have been given priority," Kumar said.
According to the data culled from the State/Union Territory-wise number of adoptions under the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015, Maharastra has witnessed the highest number of adoptions both in-country -- 570, and inter-country -- 151.
Karnataka (259), Odisha (183), Tamil Nadu (173), Madhya Pradesh (155), West Bengal (147) and Uttar Pradesh (141) are among the other states with higher number of in-country adoptions.
