Installations created basically out of junk depicting traditional drummers who are an inseparable part of the Durga pujas, have been created by an artist at pandals here.

Six 25-feet installations have been created from cans, crowns and labels left behind in drop boxes in a tie up between soft drinks major Coca-Cola and 1000 retailers.

"We collected around 10,000 crowns and bottle caps. We also got 5000 cans and 5000 labels," artist Piyali Sadhukhan, who made the installations for pandals at Deshopriyo Park, Lake Town Adhibashi Brindo, Howrah and Durgapur, told PTI.

"I created six structures of dhakis," she said.

"Each person who contributed to the making of the pieces has been part of the process and I think this is the true spirit of collective enthusiasm of the Durga Pujas," Sadhukhan said.

"This is something new even for me and for all of us in India. Junk art is still evolving and not many artists have experience in this field," Sadhukan who worked with a team of 20 people for about a month to create the art works, said.

"But this is interesting because it passes on the message that there is art in everything, even in trash," she said.

Coca-Cola officials said that the installations would be retained after the Pujas.

"We, have however not firmed up whether these would be kept at a public venue or at the bottler's premises," a company spokesperson said.

"Given that a lot of people visit our plants, installing them at our bottling plants is an option that we are considering," he added.
