Writer Arundhati Roy today came in support of a Delhi University teacher whose residence was raided on Thursday by a joint team of Delhi and Maharastra police on suspicision of his alleged links with Maoists.

The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) has also condemned the raid at the residence of G N Saibaba, a teacher at Ram Lal Anand college,

"It is a serious matter. It has started with a small incident of conducting a raid but it could end in a serious tragedy," Roy told a press conference at Saibaba's residence in Delhi University's North Campus.

A joint team of Maharashtra and Delhi police had raided the house of Saibaba on Thursday. The police had seized a number of hard disks and a few pen drives from his house during the raid.

Security agencies have been claiming that Saibaba has been associated with an organisation called the Revolutionary Democratic Front, considered to be a front outfit of CPI (Maoist). The RDF has been banned by Andhra Pradesh government.

Roy said just an association with a particular "political outfit" cannot be a reason for conducting a raid.
