An armed cadre of the A'chik Songna An'pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militant outfit, wanted for the kidnapping and murder of an IB officer and a businessman, was shot dead in South Garo Hills district in an encounter, the police said today.

The incident took place yesterday when a special police force raided the militant's hideout in remote Kemdang village in the district in which there were about seven armed militants, IG (Operations) G H P Raju said.

In the encounter, the body of one person was found and was today identified as of Sengbath Shira, a wanted cadre of the ASAK who was involved in the cold blooded killing of IB officer Bikash Singh in September last year, he said.

While the other militants managed to escape in the raid, the operation was on to sanitise the area, Raju said.

IB official Bikash Singh and his businessman friend were kidnapped at gunpoint from a taxi when they were travelling to the district headquarters.

Their bodies were recovered a month later from a shallow grave in a forested area in Bolchugre area, about 35 km from the district headquarters.
