An 'Asha' would be paid an incentive of Rs 500 for ensuring that the first child to a couple is born after two years of marriage, another Rs 500 if there is a space of 3 years after the birth of the first child and the second and Rs 1,000 in case the couple opts only for two children, an official spokesman said here today.

He said that the state government has been taking several steps to improve family planning methods for population stabilisation.

Various reviews and fields visits have revealed that despite trained personnel available in the field, clients do not avail of spacing methods due to absence of proper counselling and information regarding the benefit or myths and misconceptions, the spokesman said.

In order to address this issue, it has been decided by the Centre to utilise the services of Ashas for ensuring spacing in family planning and incentivising her for the efforts.
