An Assistant Sub-Inspector of police, Amehed Gurung, was assaulted by some anti-social elements at Mirik in Darjeeling district and succumbed to his injuries today.
The ASI of Mirik police station was beaten by the drunken goons with iron rods, bamboos, lathis and 'khukri' (a Nepali weapon) when he was on duty in Mirik Bazar area on Thursday.
Locals had heard the ASI crying out 'I am a policeman" to the attackers which fell on deaf ears.

Seven persons were today arrested in this connection, Darjeeling Superintendent of police Amit Javalgi said.
According to Darjeeling SP's office, raids were continuing to nab three others who were involved in incident.
After beating him, the goons had left him on the road side following which locals had rushed him to Mirik Primary Health Centre.
He was then taken to Kurseong Sub-divisional hospital from where he was referred to Siliguri hospital for treatment. He died this morning at a Siliguri nursing home, the police said.
The seven arrested youths were produced in Kurseong sub-divisional court today which remanded four of them to judicial custody and three youths to police custody.
