An Assistant Sub Inspector was found dead in suspicious circumstances in Geobala village in this border district, police said today.
Assistant Sub Inspector Kulbir Singh, who was part of a police team conducting raid at hideout of farmers' unions intent on disrupting rail traffic, was reportedly killed late last night, police said.
According to police, when police team including the ASI reached the spot, they were held hostage by the farmers.
However, farmers alleged that the ASI was drunk and he panicked after seeing huge gathering of farmers. They claimed the ASI ran away from the spot, following which he got a heart attack.
Some other police officials claimed that the ASI was beaten to death by farmers.
Inspector General Border Range R P Mittal said it was difficult to speak about the cause of ASI's death till autopsy report was tabled.
Mittal said team of doctors at Civil Hospital in Tarn Taran was conducting the postmortem.
No FIR was registered immediately.
