An assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) was today arrested by ACB for allegedly taking bribe of Rs 10,000 from a woman in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh.

"Santosh Kumar Upadhyay, posted with Marwahi police station, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000 from the complainant for disposing off a case against her," an ACB official said.

According to police, the complainant was engaged in a dispute with her sister-in-law's family based in village Tikathi in November last year and was arrested. She is currently on bail.

Both sides had then lodged complaint at Marwahi police station.

"Soon after her release, Upadhyay (52) told the complainant Rohini that another case is pending against her and her bail will be cancelled if he takes action against her," the official said.

The complainant alleged that Upadhyay had initially demanded bribe of Rs 20,000 to dispose of another complaint against her, following which she approached the ACB, Bilaspur, the official said.

ACB laid a trap in Marwahi and caught Upadhyay red-handed, the official said.

A case under various sections of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him, he added.
