ASI mowed down by truck; driver arrested

An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police was killed when he signalled a speeding truck to stop at a check post and its driver lost control, ramming the vehicle into him, police said today.

ASI Sunil Datt was killed and two police officers were injured in the incident which took place on national highway near Basantpura here in the wee hours yesterday, they said.

The truck driver has been arrested, they said.

SP, Rajpura, Bhupinder Singh Khatra said a team headed by ASI Datt had put up a checkpost near Basantpura on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

At about 1:45 AM, the team signalled a speeding truck to stop but the driver lost control and the vehicle ran over the ASI, killing him on the spot, Khatra said.
 

Punjab Homeguard jawan Purushottam Dass and Head Constable Mahinder Singh were injured in the incident, he said.

A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty was registered under relevant sections of the IPC against the driver, police said.

Dass was admitted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh and his condition was stated to be critical, Khatra said.
