An assistant sub- inspector of police in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district was shot dead on Saturday by bike-borne miscreants, a senior police officer said.
They also looted a carbine from him, the officer said.
The incident occurred at a police check post situated at Markan chowk under the jurisdiction of Sakra police station, Deputy Superintendent of Police (East) Gaurav Pandey said.
The deceased has been identified as Maleshwar Ram, he said.
Ram, who was carrying out vehicle checking at the post, had stopped the bike-borne miscreants and asked documents of the two-wheeler, Pandey said, adding that one of the three miscreants fired four bullets at him after an altercation.
The unidentified criminals also looted a carbine from the ASI after shooting him and fled the spot, he said.

The policeman was rushed to a private nursing home in Muzaffarpur town where he died during the course of treatment, Pandey said.
"An investigation has been started and raids are being conducted to nab the culprits," he added.
