An Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) was today rescued from the premises of a private school in Gurgaon by a Delhi-based wildlife body.

According to Wildlife SOS, the animal was found inside the storage room of the school. After getting a call on its helpline number, the NGO rescued the animal.

"We believe the civet cat had wandered out of the neighbouring forest area, which is its natural habitat. Rapid habitat encroachment and deforestation is beginning to redefine the boundaries between forest and urban areas," Kartick Satyanarayan, CEO of Wildlife SOS, said in a statement.

The animal has been kept under observation and will be released back into natural habitat once it is fit, it said.

According to the statement, the animal is also known as 'toddy cat' and it is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It is known for producing civet 'musk' used in perfumes and medicines.
