An Additional Superintendent of Police was injured when his service revolver went off accidentally, a police official said today.

Md Suhail, Operations, in Rohtas district, was disembarking from his official vehicle near a hotel located on Station Road under Dehri police station area last evening when his service revolver, that he was carrying in the pocket of his trouser, accidentally went off and hit him on his leg, Superintendent of Police M S Dhillon said.

The injured cop was admitted to a local hospital where the attending doctors referred him to a private hospital in Varanasi, Dhillon said.

The bullet has been removed from the ASP's leg and seized for examination in forensic laboratory, the SP said.

While the IPS officer was out of danger, a probe was on and the driver and guard of the police officer were being interrogated in this connection, the SP said.

The incident took place when the ASP was on way to his home after making purchase for Muharram, the SP said.

The incident had sent the state government to a tizzy as it came close on the heels of another incident in which an IPS officer Rakesh Kumar and two other cops were shot at and injured by unidentified criminals in the state capital on October eight last.
