Assam CIC asks cops to expedite reports of land grab cases

The Assam Information Commission has asked the police to provide within 30 days the details of total number of land grabbing cases reported in different police stations of the city as such cases have been on the rise.

The commission has been receiving several Right to Information RTI cases, especially in Guwahati with allegations of involvement of government functionaries, including those from revenue department and police.

With a view to informing the public about the status of implementation of the Assam Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act 2010, State Chief Information Commissioner H S Das has directed the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati to provide certain details in the police website.

 

The CIC directed the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati to provide within 30 days suo motu, through their website the details of total number of land grabbing cases reported in different police stations of the city; number of police cases registered; number of cases presently under investigation.

The number of cases referred to the Special Tribunal set up for the purpose; number of cases disposed of by Special Tribunal showing the number of acquittals and number of convictions since coming into force of the Assam Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act, 2010, were also directed to be provided.
