"I congratulate Pranabda on his nomination for the highest office. He thoroughly deserves it being one of the most respected and trusted politician down the years," Gogoi said in a statement here.
"His rich experience will help the country march ahead through his acumen being in public life for so long," the Chief Minister said.
APCC vice president and former MP, Bishnu Prasad, also welcomed the UPA's decision, saying "it will have a positive impact on the country's constitutional history."
