Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today congratulated Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the 14th President of India.
Kovind, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, has had an illustrious career where he worked for amelioration of the weaker sections of the society, the Governor said in a statement here.
His vast experience as a member of Rajya Sabha would help him to carry forward the rich legacy of Rashtrapati Bhavan and contribute to the growth and development of the country, Purohit said.

Sonowal, who was one of the proposers of Kovind as the NDA candidate, said the President-elect is well known for his strong advocacy of the rights of the weaker section of the society, social development and spread of education.
"Starting his journey from a farmer's family, Kovind Ji is now all set to adorn the top constitutional post of the country. His vast knowledge and understanding of the Constitution will immensely benefit the nation", Sonowal added.
Kovind was today elected as the country's 14th president defeating opposition's nominee Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker.
