Assam Governor Padmanabhan Balakrishna Acharya today cut short his visit to West Bengal and left for Assam following the death of 65 persons in a series of attacks by NDFB(S) insurgents there.

Acharya, who was at Ranaghat in Nadia district in connection with a programme, said he received news of the insurgent attack that left scores dead.

"Some of the victims were poor and innocent people from Jharkhand. It is a very painful incident," he said.

"I am leaving for Assam very today. Meanwhile, I have talked to various levels of administration in Assam. The Central Government has been trying to stop the insurgency problem," Acharya said.

The Governor, accompanied by wife Kabita Acharya, came here yesterday to attend a function of a school as chief guest and was scheduled to visit Mayapur, famous for the temple of the IISCO, today.

But he cancelled the plan and left for Assam.
