Assam Governor's Wishes on 'No Tobacco Day'

Governor of Assam and Nagaland P B Acharya has wished a healthy day to the people on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.

In a statement here the Governor said maintenance of of good health is essential to lead a long and happy life with one being conscious of one's health by taking utmost care for maintaining good health and to remember that 'Health is Wealth'.

No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31 to encourage abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe.

The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987.
 

It is estimated that nearly 6 million deaths occur each year worldwide and 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to passive smoking, the statement said.

The increasing consumption of tobacco products by younger population led to the subsequent rise in the cases of cancer, heart disease and respiratory ailments which is a serious concern for the medical fraternity, it added.
