Opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) raised the issue during Question Hour and urged the government to ask the Centre to declare the problem as a national calamity.
Raising the issue, AGP's Phani Bhusan Choudhury, Keshav Mahanta and Padma Hazarika and AIUDF's M Hussain pointed that this year's flood was unprecedented and had brought untold suffering to the people in various parts of the state.
The opposition pressed for moving a resolution but Water Resource Minister Prithvi Majhi intervened saying the government on its part would move the same in tomorrow's session.
Admitting that the flood has been unprecedented this year, the minister said that all steps have been taken to mitigate the suffering of the people.
"The flood problem has been aggravated as the river bed of Brahmaputra has become shallow and water from neighbouring states is pouring in. We have to take long-term steps to contain the problem," he said.
More than 125 people have been killed in the first wave of flood that hit the state this year.
