In view of the Supreme Court's April 28 judgement on holding National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), the Assam Government has decided to put its scheduled Common Entrance Examination (CEE) for MBBS and BDS courses in abeyance.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called upon the students to appear for the NEET to be held on July 24 and also appealed the student community not to be bogged down by the recent development and go ahead with their preparations for the NEET.
In a statement here today, Gogoi said "We fully understand the apprehensions of the students and their parents as the Government has decided to file a review petition before the Supreme Court."
Gogoi, however, said the decision on holding NEET for admission to MBBS and BDS courses would deprive students of Assam and other North Eastern states, as majority of them reside in rural and semi-urban areas and a different syllabus has been imposed on them in the guise of NEET.
The Chief Minister said the decision on holding NEET has the potential of affecting the tenets of federal structure of the country and remarked if the trend continued, all other sectors where states have greater say, would be affected.
"When Judges of the High Courts are selected state wise, why a bar has been clamped on selecting students for MBBS and BDS course state wise?" Gogoi wondered.
In view of the recent development, the state government has decided to open a counselling cell to guide aspiring students at the office of the Director of Medical Education and the contacts would be notified soon, the statement added.
