Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced that his government would launch a Rs 50-crore scheme for educational development of tea tribes, besides setting up an Education Commission.

The steps were being taken to impart higher education to students from backward classes in the state, Gogoi said at a function here.

Gogoi laid emphasise on the need to improve quality of education, giving scholarships and enhance skill development of the students from the tea community.

He also said the owner of a tea garden should invest in the overall development of the employees as proportionate to the earnings from his plantation.

"The tea garden owners should focus on improving health care, education and drinking water facilities for the people living in the garden areas," Gogoi said.
