The Assam government is considering a proposal to disallow former MLAs from drawing pension from more than one source, if the person was in a job before becoming a politician, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said.
"One MLA should not get pension from two or more places. Last night we discussed this in the Cabinet," Sarma told reporters in Assam Assembly.
Sarma said there are ex-MLAs who had been teachers or bureaucrats earlier, and are drawing pensions from both the places - his or her earlier place of work and the Assembly.
"Some states have rules that whichever pension is higher, a person gets that. It is a state subject," he said.
Asked when a decision would be taken, he said, "The government is considering this."
Sarma said he had raised this issue when he was a Congress MLA, but did not get much support from other MLAs.
