Assam, Odisha flood situation improve; rainfall in parts of

Four more persons died in floods in Assam where the overall situation improved slightly even as several parts of the country received rains.

Light rainfall was witnessed in parts of the national capital which led to an increase in humidity while the maximum temperature was recorded at 38.4 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average.

The humidity levels oscillated between 86 and 49 per cent.

In Assam, around five lakh people were affected by flood across 14 districts in the state.

Two persons lost their lives in Morigaon district and one each died in Barpeta and south Salmara districts. With this, the toll in this year's flood-related cases has gone up to 73, including eight in Guwahati.
 

Around five lakh people have been affected in Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Karimganj and Cachar districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

Till yesterday, nine lakh people were affected in the latest wave of flood across 16 districts in the state.

At the Kaziranga National Park, 10 per cent of the area was submerged.

Rivers such as the Dhansiri in Golaghat's Numaligarhand the Kushiyara at Karimganj town are flowing above the danger mark.

Heavy rains lashed most parts of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya leading to massive traffic snarls as a tree fell on a power line snapping it and damaging two vehicles. But no one was injured in the incident.

Flood-affected Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts of Odisha were limping back to normal.

Train services were restored between Rayagada and Theruvali with some restrictions three days after floods disrupted rail movement Odisha's southern region.

However, tribal group Dongoria Kondh continued to remain cut off from rest of the state as the only bridge connecting Niyamgiri area was washed away in the flood.

As many as 28,000 people in 70 villages have been affected in Rayagada district.

However, the MeT office has forecast heavy rainfall at many places in the state and asked fishermen not to venture into the sea.

Maximum temperatures in Punjab and Haryana soared in absence of significant rainfall in the two states in a week, with Hisar turning out to be the hottest at 39.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal level.

Ambala in Haryana, too, had a hot day recording a maximum of 37.7 degrees Celsius while there was no relief from sultry weather conditions for residents of Karnal where the mercury settled at a high of 37 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a high of 36 degrees Celsius, up one notch against normal while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their maximums at 35.5 degrees Celsius and 38.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

Light to moderate rainfall occurred at many areas across Rajasthan since yesterday while day temperatures stayed between 34 to 39 degrees Celsius at most of the places in the state.

In the state's eastern parts, Khushalgarh in Banswara district gauged 6 cm of rains followed by 5 cm in Arthuna in the same district and Govindgarh in Alwar district.

Sanchore in Jalore district in western part of Rajasthan recorded 5 cm of rain followed by 4 cm in Sriganganagar.

Bihar got a relief from hot and dry weather conditions following a heavy shower this afternoon with Patna recording a high of 35.4 degrees Celsius.

Besides Patna, there were reports of rain from Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnea.

Most places in Telangana continued to receive heavy downpour with Kaleswaram in Karimnagar district recording 6 cms of rainfall.

Several low-lying areas in the state were inundated and rivulets in spate due to rainfall for the last few days.

Hyderabad and its outskirts received 3 to 4 cms of rainfall.

In Thane district of Maharashtra, two unoccupied residential buildings collapsed this morning due to heavy rains which have been lashing the city for for the last three days.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorm also occurred at isolated places in Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, and day temperatures hovered around normal levels in the region.
