Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced that his government would soon launch a special scheme for poor meritorious students of the state.

The scheme would be launched keeping in view the sterling performances put in by poor students in the High School Leaving Certificate, High Madrassa and Higher Secondary examinations, results for which were announced yesterday, Gogoi said in a statement.

The government would extend scholarships to poor meritorious students so that they can pursue higher education and this step would ensure that students of poor and weaker sections of the society get quality education, he said.

"The foundation has been laid for bridging the gap of education between affluent and poor students. These students are our real assets and they deserve a helping hand," he said.

These students have "shown to the whole world that when there is a will, there is a way. Their performances will inspire and motivate the next batch of students," he added.
