"There are vacancies for 12,000 posts of teachers. So we plan to recruit 12,000 teachers by March 31," Assam Education and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after a meeting with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi here today.

He added: "Currently there are 480 schools in tea gardens which are being operated by the tea companies. Our aim is to provincialise all these schools".

Sarma said that the education department is contemplating to expand the biometric card system for checking teachers' attendance to schools.

"We are looking that option of having solar powered biometric cards at LP schools," he said.

A total of 4,000 new schools are likely to come up across the state in 2013, he added.

Sarma said from next academic year the state government would provide uniform allowance of students directly in cash to guardians.

"The amount of Rs 400 would be provided to parents and guardians of the wards so that they can themselves buy the uniforms. It will be better than giving the money to educational institutions," Sarma said.
