The Privilege Committee of the Maharashtra Legislative Council has recommended no action be taken against two senior TV journalists for their remarks against presiding officers, Chief Minister and members of the legislature in 2013.
The matter relates to an incident during the 2013 Budget session when traffic police inspector Sachin Suryavanshi was beaten up by some MLAs on the legislature's premises for allegedly using foul language against the legislators earlier.
The incident shocked the state and the legislators were criticised roundly by the media.
Congress's Ashok Jagtap later moved a privilege notice against senior TV journalists Nikhil Wagle and Rajiv Khandekar for their remarks on the episode.
The committee, headed by senior Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe, in its report tabled before the House today, noted the two editors had made objectionable remarks and committed a breach of privilege of the legislature.
However, the two had appeared before the committee and clarified they had not made remarks against all the members, it noted.
While the committee accepted the freedom of expression of media, it felt this freedom should not be misused.
Gorhe further stated that taking note of cooperation given by Wagle and Khandekar no further action should be taken against them.
