Asst Engg and Jr Engg arrested for taking bribe

An Assistant Engineer and a Junior Engineer were arrested by the anti-corruption vigilance wing in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district today for allegedly taking Rs 14,000 bribe from a road construction contractor to clear his final bill.

Following a complaint, a trap was laid by Baripada vigilance unit and Assistant Engineer Dasarathi Mahalik and Junior Engineer Basudev Mohapatra, both of Badasahi block, were caught red handed while demanding and accepting Rs 14,000 as bribe, a vigilance release here said.

The action came on a written report of the complainant Babulal Nayak for demand of illegal gratification of Rs 28,000 by the accused to pass the final bill of Rs 2,80,000 for construction of a concrete road which was executed by the complainant, it said.
 

When the complainant expressed his inability to arrange Rs 28,000, they demanded 14,000 as first instalment after which he reported the matter to Baripada Vigilance Unit Office, the release said.

During the trap, both Mahallik and Mohapatra were caught, it said adding the bribe money of Rs 8,500 and Rs 5,500 have been recovered from Mohapatra and Mahalik respectively.
