Backing Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray's idea to set up a theme park of global standards at Mahalaxmi race course, RPI leader Ramdas Athawale said the Maharashtra government should not extend the lease of the race course.

"The state government should not extend the lease of the Mahalaxmi race course as it can be shifted to Navi Mumbai. A theme park should come up there," he told reporters.

"Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan should not take a diversionary decision merely because Opposition parties demand a theme park," he said.

Raking up the issue of constructing a memorial for Babasaheb Ambedkar, Athawale said the state government should begin construction at the 12.5 acre Indu Mill lands by August 15.

"If the government does not begin construction of the memorial by August 15, we will protest from August 16. The government must also get various clearances from the Centre to go ahead with construction work," he said.
