An attempt to rob the cash van of a bank by three unidentified persons was today foiled by an alert guard who was injured in the incident here, police said.

While the cash van arrived at the ATM of HSBC Bank's branch on Rammaruti Road here at around 8.30 AM, three persons, who had come in a car, tried to snatch away the cash kept in the vehicle, inspector (crime) M J Badga said.

However the armed guard, Sudhakar Mahapadi, of the ATM resisted their attempt. The trio attacked him with a chopper, but despite being injured he prevented them from laying their hands on the cash, Badga said.

As the guard raised an alarm, the three men fled from there in a white car, Badga said.

The injured guard was later admitted to Kaushalya Hospital.

Police have so far not revealed the amount of cash kept in the van.

An offence has been registered against the unknown persons under sections 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 398 of the IPC and a manhunt is on to nab the trio, the police official said.

Senior police officials, including DCP Zone-I Ashok Dudhe, visited the spot and and guided the investigation.
