Less than 24 hours after Rs 12.23 lakhs were looted from a bank ATM, a 27-year-old dismissed employee was arrested and the entire amount recovered, the police said.

Prabhakaran had taken advantage of the absence of the security guard, who had left to have some snacks, to disable the CCTV, the police said today. He then used a 'secret number' to steal the cash from the money dispensing machine yesterday, they said.

The theft was detected in the evening when bank officials arrived to total the cash, following which the police was alerted, Superintendent of Police S R Senthil Kumar said.

Vehicle checks were conducted and Prabhakaran was nabbed while riding a two-wheeler today, carrying a bag. The entire amount was found in it, he said.

Prabhakaran had been dismissed three months back after he was found to have stolen Rs 50,000, the SP said.
