Attack on witness: Narayan Sai sent to 7-days' judicial custody

This is in connection with an attack last year on a key witness in a case of rape registered against him

Narayan Sai, son of self-styled godman Asaram, was on Wednesday sent to seven-days' judicial custody, in connection with an attack last year on a key witness in a case of rape registered against him.

Sai was sent to Karnal jail until February 16 by the court of Judicial Magistrate Madhur Bajaj here.

He was brought to the court from Surat jail under heavy police deployment.

In May last year, Mahendra Chawla, a key witness in the rape case against Sai was shot at by unidentified assailants in Sanauli village in Panipat district.

Earlier, a woman had accused Sai of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at his Surat ashram, following which he was booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code, including rape, unnatural sex, molestation, wrongful confinement.
 
Sai was lodged in the Surat jail since his arrest in December 2013.
