Iraqi officials say attacks in Baghdad and town south of the Iraqi capital have killed at least eight people.

A police officer says a car bomb ripped through a commercial area in Baghdad's northern neighborhood of Shaab today, killing six civilians and wounding 16. He says two women were among the dead.

Another officer says a bomb struck an outdoor market in the town of Mahmudiyah, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Baghdad, killing two people. One of them was an 8-year old child. That attack also wounded six people.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they're not authorized to talk to reporters.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, which bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group, which controls large parts of Iraq.
