Attacks on tribals are in the same range as other sections of the society and the causes can range from land disputes to personal disputes, government told the Rajya Sabha today.
Citing the provisional monthly statistics of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Tribal Minister Jual Oram said a total of 11, 233 cases were reported under crimes committed against people belonging to Scheduled Tribes during 2014.
Replying to questions, he said the attacks on people belonging to tribal populations are in the same range as other sections of the population.
When some Congress members claimed that data showed that there had been more such attacks on tribals in states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, Oram said the states with greater tribal populations may show higher figures.
As per the NCRB data shared by the government in the House, 1983 cases related to crimes against STs had been registered in Gujarat while 1952 such cases had been registered in Madhya Pradesh and 1804 in Rajasthan.
Replying to a supplementary question, Oram said the causes for these attacks could include land, personal disputes or other reasons.
He said there is a minimal incidence of ethnic clashes though such incidents had happened in some North Eastern states like Tripura or Assam.
