CBI has begun investigations in two cases related to attempts made on the lives of government officials in Madhya Pradesh allegedly by the sand mafia as they were trying to check their illegal activities.

The agency said it has registered two cases relating to attempts to murder public servants in Morena.

"The cases have been registered on the directions of Gwalior Bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court in a Writ Petition No. 8204/2013 (PIL) for transferring the investigation of two cases," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said here today.

The agency has registered the first case against unknown persons who allegedly shot at and critically injured a head constable of MP's Special Armed Force (SAF) in March.

Constable Vishwanath was part of the force which challenged motorcycle-borne mafia members escorting trolleys carrying illegal sand mined from the Chambal protected zone, the CBI said.

"When the tractors carrying sand were being stopped by the teams comprising the officials of Special Armed Force and Forest Department, the accused persons accompanying the tractors and riding on motor cycles, fired with country-made revolvers, in which one Head Constable of Special Armed Force (SAF) was injured," Prasad said.

The agency registered the second case which also took place in March when the team comprising officials of National Chambal Sanctuary and SAF was attacked by unknown members.

"It was further alleged that on March 2, 2014, when the tractors carrying sand were stopped by the said team, the accused tried to run over the tractors on these public servants," Prasad said.
