A rare variety of Australian owl was today rescued from a park in Nagapattinam.

The nocturnal bird was spotted by some people at Thambidurai park and crows were attacking it.

Fire and Rescue services personnel rescued the injured owl which was not in a position to fly and arranged for first-aid for the bird.

It was later handed over to wildlife authorities.

According to officials, the owl appears to be a rare species - its head, upper body and feathers were rich white in colour and it had large wings and legs.

It might probably be a sub-species of the Australian Owl family, wildlife department officials said.
