The district authorities here got the jewellery shops closed after mid-night as people rushed to buy gold after the government moved to weed out Rs 500 and 1,000 currency notes.

"We got some shops closed at 1 am today at MG Road at Sarafa (jewellery) market here," District Collector P Narhari said today.

Usually, the shops at the Sarafa market get closed around 9-10 pm.

"We got the shops closed keeping in view the law and order situation and asked people buying jewellery to return home," Narhari added.
