Jammu and Kashmir Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) today kick started a demolition drive as part of its efforts to preserve the world famous Dal Lake - the star attraction for tourists visiting the summer capital Srinagar.

"A massive demolition operation was today carried out in the Saida Kadal and Ashai Bagh areas in the periphery of Dal Lake as various illegal constructions had come up in the prohibited area," an official spokesperson said.

He said LAWDA intends to carry out series of demolition drives in the coming days.

Vice Chairman of LAWDA Sarmad Hafeez, who supervised the demolition drive, appealed people to demolish illegal structures on their own to save this prestigious water body for posterity.

"People are advised to desist from carrying out illegal constructions in the area falling in the jurisdiction of LAWDA and demolish their illegal structures on their own to save this prestigious water body for posterity," he said.
