An autorickshaw driver was today arrested by police for allegedly manhandling a human rights activist after she tried to click a photo of his vehicle's licence plate for demanding excess fare.

"We have arrested the auto driver for allegedly manhandling the woman activist after she tried to click a photo of his vehicle's licence plate for demanding Rs 150 for a two-kilometer ride," Additional Commissioner of Police Kamalpant told reporters here.

The victim said she and her friend had hired the auto yesterday, but the driver demanded Rs 150 for a two kilometer ride.

"When I clicked a photo of the licence details displayed at the back of driver's seat, all hell broke loose. He was so enraged that he stopped the vehicle, got out and grabbed my shoulder, and started yelling in Kannada, which I did not understand," the victim said.

The activist approached the Ashoknagar police station to register a complaint but was mocked for not knowing Kannada.

Finally, she said, she mentioned about the incident in a complaint sheet, but it was lodged in Kannada as a non- cognisable offence, not an FIR.

Not satisfied with the police action, she visited a senior police official and thereafter a proper complaint was lodged, she said.
