Auto driver held for assaulting, robbing Octogenarian from WB

An auto driver was today arrested and his vehicle was impounded for allegedly assaulting and robbing an 81-year-old retired school teacher from West Bengal, of his mobile phone, here, police said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, when the octogenarian Tushar Panchanan, who was on a visit to the Union Territory, had engaged an autorickshaw near the old prison building in the town to go to Aurobindo Ashram.

The auto driver Vimal Raj, took him to a secluded place near the fishing harbour in Thengaithittu, near here and allegedly assaulted and robbed the retired teacher of his mobile phone and other belongings.
 

The autodriver then left him near the fishing harbour and fled the scene.

However, with the help of locals, Panchanan lodged a complaint with the police in Mudaliarpet who traced the auto driver today near the old prison building and arrested him.

They also impounded his autorickshaw

The accused has been remanded to judicial custody after being produced before a court today, they said.

The mobile phone and other belongings of Panchanan were recovered, police said.
