An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly being responsible for the death of a foreign-breed dog after it consumed poison-laced meat hung on his gate at Sundarapuram in the city, police said today.

Shivakumar, a member of Kennel Club of India, lodged a complaint that a Denmark-breed dog, worth Rs two lakh, died two days ago, after eating a chicken piece, hung by the driver Shaktivel on the gate of his residence, police said.

Though Shaktivel claimed that he had placed the meat with an aim to kill stray dogs, which have become a menace in the area, police registered a case under IPC Sec 429 (mischief by killing or maiming, including poisoning of any animal of the value of above Rs.50) and arrested him last night.
